Reasons I LOVE the Beach

I love the beach for many reasons.
I love the ocean, it's powerful and almost scary, but incredibly beautiful all at the same time.

I first remember seeing the ocean when I was 15.  My sister lived on The Presidio (when it was still an Army base).  She lived in base housing and had a big picture window overlooking the ocean.  My family drove out from Oklahoma and I spent hours on the beach picking up seaglass and continually being amazed that I could see the Golden Gate Bridge. (previously only viewed on television it didn't seem like something that existed in real life to me)  A few years ago we went back to that same beach and I was amazed that it was still the same (except no seaglass - I guess that's a good thing).  It's probably the only place I've ever visited that didn't change after 30 years. I'm thankful for the preservation of this piece of property.  I found a piece of abalone shell when I visited this beach in 1978, about 7 years ago I had it wire wrapped to make a pendant.  The wire wrap worked perfectly because I didn't want to alter it from it's original state.

The next time I visited the ocean was much different - Jamaica, man!  My husband and I spent a few days in an island paradise and I was amazed that the ocean could be so blue and so crystal clear.  And so began my love affair with the Caribbean Sea.  We've traveled to Maui, the Mayan Riviera, Key West, Belize, Cape Cod, Alabama and Florida.  I can never get enough beach time.  I am never ready to come home.

Here are a few of the reasons I love the ocean and the beach!

"My beach" is on Lake Ontario. My dad had a fishing cabin there and my mom still keeps it. It's so wild and untamed up there...even though my dad passed away in 1999, I still feel like he's up there in the warm end of summer.

That photo in San Francisco is stunning...magical.

Thanks for sharing your beach story, I found it very touching. Your beach sounds wonderful! I have not had the opportunity to visit any of the Great Lakes, although I have been to a lake in Minnesota. Visiting that beautiful part of America is definitely on my list. And thanks for your comment on the photo, I love it mostly because all those people "cluttering" up the foreground are members of my family.

I love the beach, even though I only started going there to swim last year. It was a very nice experience considering that I grew up only about two kilometers from a river but was warned never to go there. As a result, I had nothing to do with water until much later in my life though I still did not swim. I plan on making going to the beach a regular summer activity.

I only go in the ocean if A) the water is warm and B) I can see all the critters in there with me. I didn't go in the water in northern or southern California or Cape Cod, but love just walking along the sand. I can also sit on the beach with a book all day long, if someone brings me a snack and a drink!
